If you wish to slow a fall, using the glide feature of the cape, simply holding the A button while in midair will do the trick. Mario will climb for a short duration, but in order to continue flying, you must hold the B button and rock Mario back and forth using the right and left buttons on the D-Pad. To fly with the cape, you must run (holding the B button) for a sufficient distance (about the length of the screen) and then jump into the air. There is no limitation to the distance you can fly if you can master the timing and technique of it. When Mario is equipped with a cape, it is possible to both fly and glide. When he is big, he can use his R jump to break the yellow bricks, as well as to completely eliminate bad guys or bounce off of invulnerable bad guys. The A button produces a straightforward jump, while the R produces a twirling-jumping motion that allows Mario to do many things. The A button and R buttons serve as jump buttons. If you hold down and release the B button, Mario will drop it, allowing you to easily pick it up again. If you hold up on the D-Pad and release the B button, Mario will throw his held object straight up in the air. Once an item is picked up, Mario will pick it up or throw it when the B button it released. Holding the B button will allow Mario to run quickly as well as pick up various objects in the world. When equipped with a fire flower, tapping the B button will fire a fireball, a technique useful for permanently clearing bad guys off the level. The B button serves multiple roles in the game, so you will soon become very familiar with it. Once inside a level, the D-Pad is used to move Mario around. Game save options can be brought up by pressing Start, and Select brings up a progress log to give you an idea of how much of the game you've completed. By standing on a level and pressing R, Luigi can be used instead of Mario. Mario can be moved around the world map with the D-Pad, and he can enter a level by moving onto the level and pressing A. Mario must progress along the paths of Dinosaur Land to get to Bowser's Castle, but many treacherous levels and smaller castles must be cleared first. Level layout is pretty straightforward, with a world map representing an overview of Dinosaur Land.
